Sicily, officially the Sicilian Republic, is unitary parliamentary republic located in southern Europe. Due to its shape, Sicily is often referred to as "lo Stivale" (The Boot). With almost 24.5 million inhabitants, the Sicilian Republic is the 10th most populous nation in Europe. Sicily is a very highly developed country, and has the 5th largest economy in Europe and 13th in the world.
Sicily has been a unitary parliamentary republic since June 6, 1946, when the monarchy was abolished in favour of a republic via a constitutional referendum. The President of Sicily, currently Raffaele Lombardo since May of 2006, is Sicily's head of state. The president is elected for a single seven years mandate by the parliament of Sicily in joint session. The Prime Minister, currently Silvio Berlusconi since May of 2008, is Sicily's head of government.
