Ruins of Satchapoya
Satchapoya is a ruined city in the Western Amazon Rain forest in Brazil. Also known as El Dorado, Akator and the Lost City of Z, its original name was lost in the mists of time, but it is called Satchapoya by the remaining Chachapoya people. It was built in the 15th century AD and contained numerous temples, pyramids, palaces, statues and other things. It was famous for its large treasure of gold, however, no known foreigner had ever visited the city. Both the Incas and Spanish searched for it, to no avail. It is estimated as much as 500,000 people lived in the city at its peak, making it one of the largest cities in the world at that time. The Brazilian government is planning to excavate the city, but the Chachapoyas view the city as sacred and protest against the government's plans.
