In April of 1829, due to problems of health, Bolívar resigns the presidency. The parliament accepts the resignation and chooses Francisco de Paula Santander as president and Antonio José de Sucre as vice-president. A 6 years presidential period begins.

Bolívar is named Colombian ambassador to the United Kingdom, where he has two main tasks: to get Spanish recognition of Colombia as an independent nation and to get British aid to Colombia.

In 1833, the new Spanish government, recognizes the independence of Colombia and the other Hispano-American nations.
