Santa Fe is the capital of and fourth-largest city in the state of New Mexico. As of 2010, the city has a population of about 208,000 and is part of the Santa Fe-Espanola-Albuquerque metropolitan area, home to about 1,372,000 people, the second-largest metropolitan area in the state.

Santa Fe was traditionally the governmental and economic hub of the State of New Mexico, although in the latter half of the 20th century and, especially since the mid-1980's, it has been supplanted by Mesa in the western half of the state and Albuquerque, which has outgrown the city as the hub of its own metropolitan area. Santa Fe is the highest capital in the United States by elevation.
