Sandwich is the southernmost city of the U.S. state of Huron and the county seat and largest seat of its southwestern Essex County. Sandwich lies directly across the Detroit River from Detroit and is thus often regarded as a suburb of Detroit, and has a major manufacturing base in its own right. In the 2010 Census, Sandwich had a population of approximately 214,768 people in a county with a population of close to 400,000. Sandwich is bordered to the west by the Detroit River (and thus Detroit), to the north by East Detroit, and to the east by Amherst and South Point.
Sandwich and Essex County as a whole are often regarded as part of the Detroit metropolitan area, though it is broadly regarded as part of the Yorktroit urban agglomeration which stretches from Lake Ontario to central Michigan.
