After the First World War, France had a controversal plan to reduce the power of a united Germany by breaking off Bavaria and Austria to form a southern, Catholic German nation which would stand with France against Prussia and the north German states in the event of a second war. Britain and the U.S. opposed this plan, resulting in its abandonment.
But what if it had succeeded?
