Despite hard campaigning the Democratic Party only gained 5 seats. The party that gained the most seats was the new Centre Party. The most significant event of 1996 happened only 2 months before the election, when the Socialist Party split between the moderate left and right wings and the far left and right. The moderates broke away to form the Democratic Socialist Party, whilst the far left and right reverted back to the Communist Party label.
