The period between the 1988 and 1992 Duma elections was one of great change for Russia. The Democratic League merged with ten independent and 50 moderate socialist members to form the Democratic Party. Giving it a majority in the Duma and seeing the first Democratic government being formed. President Yeltsin created 50 new seats in the Duma and these were introduced during this election. The Democratic party won all of the new seats, plus some more and was able to form a government with an absolute majority.
