By the year 2001, Luna is the largest company in the world with profits in the hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars.
December 11, 1998 - Luna Inc. launches the satellite Icarus. The satellite consists of a giant mirror made of highly heat reflective foil which is used to direct the sun's heat energy on parts of the globe. The satellite is used to allow crop growth in previously frozen areas. As a result Canada becomes one of the leading agricultural nations.

He also creates the World Christian Leadership Conference (WCLC), which meets in the Vatican on this date. Attending are representatives from every major denomination of the Christian Faith. At the conference, the groundwork for what will eventually become the Royal Christian Empire is laid.
March 20, 2001 - Mohammad Khatami, the president of Iran, arranges the assassination of Saddam Hussein by brilliantly using a sleeper agent in the dictator's bodyguard who was planted before the Iran-Iraq war. Iran quickly agrees with the group of ruling generals who replace Saddam that they and their families will be granted amnesty if they surrender control of their country. The generals agree and Iran merges with Iraq, founding the United Islamic Republic (UIR). The Sunnis and Kurds rebel and there is much bloodshed in their suppression.

Blame is placed on the radical factions in the UIR, however, the country is too powerful to punish militarily without a full scale war. The United States turns to the United Nations for help and is refused since all of the member states of the UIR still retain their individual seats in the UN. Anti-United Nations protests occur in North and South America, as well as in Europe.
September 15, 2001 - Shocked by the protests across much of the globe, the UN votes to condemn the attacks. But the UN fails to pass any sanctions against the UIR, even when clear evidence is presented confirming the guilt of the Taliban political party in the UIR.
September 18, 2001 - Infuriated by the UN's failure to act against the UIR, the European Union and the rest of Eastern Europe drop out of the United Nations. The Eastern European nations join the EU. The nations of North and South American nations also leave the UN, and use the Organization of American States as their replacement for the UN.

The delegates are refused entry by the New York Police who "nationalize" the building to the cheers of a mob of thousands of New Yorkers. When China also announces its intention to leave, the UN is permanently dissolved.

The town is designed similar to a medieval castle with a large wall of white marble surrounding the city center. The city becomes a haven for Christian refugees and wealthy Americans and Europeans as low cost housing is located next to some of the finest buildings in the world. The entire city is a model of the idealistic city. The existing housing soon runs out and within 9 months the city boasts a population of 500,000 people. An additional 10,000 are located outside the city on fertile farmland. While 4/5 of the population live outside of the walls of the city. Work then shifts to an island near the cost which will serve as a port city for the newly founded nation. The city is named Gracemaria and grows to about 100,000 people.

The death toll eventually reaches 3,142 people, only 60 of which were non-Muslim. The most prominent death was Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the President of Turkey. The UIR believes that by removing the secularist leader, the Muslims in the country will move to join the republic. They are wrong.

However, it has a slower muzzle velocity and the rounds all resemble tracer rounds when fired. Plasma weapons will gain popularity and become the weapon of choice for professional armies due to advancements in personal armor that makes most standard ordnance obsolete. The protection of modern armor makes hit and run attacks by guerrillas armed with conventional weapons obsolete. Only groups with the money to purchase plasma weapons are effective. This is mainly cited as the reason for the lack of effective resistance movements in modern war.

This allows the RCE to view any location on the globe in video footage and will prove to be its biggest intelligence gathering tool.
