The Kingdom of Romania was established together with Serbia in the Russo-Turkish war that raged from 1806 to 1812. Moldavia and Wallachia were granted independence as a united Kingdom of Romania by the Russian victor of this war.
The country has ever since remained in the Russian sphere of influence.
