The position of Consul refers to the elected leader of the Imperial Senate. Since 1635, the Consul serves as the head of the newly reformed legislative branch of the Roman Empire, and handles their issues in state along with the Roman Emperor.

For the first few decades, the Consul typically acted against the influence and position of the Emperor, working with the pro-Republican Senate to weaken the Emperor's authority.
