Robert E. Lee Day is a holiday marking the birth date of Union General and President Robert E. Lee, observed each year on January 19, Lee's birthday. Because he was a Union general, it is mainly celebrated in the Northern United States. However, because of Lee continuing President Lincoln's policy of leniency towards the former Confederate States during his nearly two years as President, he is widely respected by many in the Southern United States.
