The Republic of the Two Canadas, often simply referred to as United Canada, was a short lived entity that existed in the 1840s. It was formed following the Canadian Revolution as a loose union consisting of Upper and Lower Canada. A transitional committee was created to elaborate new institutions but faced many problems such as choosing a site for the national capital. A temporary solution measure taken was to have parliament of the republic moves every sitting between Quebec and Toronto.
Despite the good will of many politicians and several offer of compromise, too many difficulties doomed the union and in 1845, the republic was officially dissolved with Upper Canada being accepted as the US state of Ontario and Lower Canada declaring sovereignty under the name of Laurentia.
