The Republic of Wellington is the first nation to be formed on the frozen continent of Antarctica. The nation was one the former Roman Imperial Dominion of Weddell and the Roman Antarctic Territory. Wellington is one of the least populated nations in the world of its population of 101,528 people. Wellington is also a very isolated nation even though it is straight across the Drake Passage from Patagonia.
Early Colonization, Conflict, and the Mackenzie Colony
The area around the Antarctic Peninsula was discovered by the famous cartographer James Cook in the early 1700s. However nations such as Galicia and later Patagonia would set up small outposts on the continent only to abandon them after some time. In 1908 ships under the Roman Sir Edward Beatty landed on the tip of the peninsula and set up an outpost named Mackenzie. People however mainly anarchists, socialists, and people against the Roman government were forced into exile in the Roman Antarctic Territory. The population of Mackenzie swiftly boomed from about 30 scientists to over 2000 people. Surviving on grain imports and local wildlife meant the people began to expand southward. Many small socialist states were easily crushed by the small garrison of Roman soldiers deployed to the small colony. The most notable was the crushing of the largest (by population standards) of these states known as the Marxlander Republic in 1912 where with only one small mortar and the whole Roman garrison of almost 100 men stormed the village of Paradise. The population of the city was at least 150 socialists trying to form a utopia down five miles from Mackenzie. About 10 soldiers were killed as the Marxlander's did have several rifles and small arms. The Romans would later occupy the South Orkney Islands even though they were claimed by Patagonia. The Socialist occupations would occur straight up until the start of the Great War. The Romans also established an outpost named Halley which would eventually become Wellingtons 3rd largest city. The Great War started in South America in 1914 though and Mackenzie was quickly dragged into the war. The population of Mackenzie was about 2000 people in 1914. The colonial government managed to build up an army of 400 men (most of these socialists). With small pack artillery guns and light mortars under naval assistance Mackenzien troops stormed the Teutonic Von Raumsland outpost in Antarctica. The 400 soldiers quickly overwhelmed the light Garrison of 120 people in the outpost. Mackenzien soldiers were used to occupy the are until the wars end in 1919. Other Mackenzien soldiers were pilots serving on the western front and Patagonian front. After the war more people flocked to the colony raising its population to around 400 to 5000 by 1925. In 1923, a group of Columbian missionaries brought with them something that would spark an industrial revolution in Antarctica. The automobile or car bewildered the population of Mackenzie enough for people to start mining in there basements. The first coal mine was founded in late 1924 and an influx of workers brought the population slowly up. In 1926 a bunch of environmentalist nut jobs came down and started to plant trees in the land which formerly hand ice covering it. This would later become the Turner "Forest". By 1930 the population has swelled to over 10,000 people all hungry for riches in the untapped colony. Some Columbian workers attempted to found there own nation called Roosevelt on Roosevelt Island. The small community was quickly to lose up by the Mackenzien government. Industrialization slowly continued into the 1930s bringing economic prosperity in the time of the global depression. By 1935 the Roman government was satisfied with the population that the Colony of Mackenzie was renamed into a Dominion.
Dominion of Weddell
On January 1st, 1935, the population of the Mackenzie Colony was 10,000 people, enough for the small colony to be granted as a Dominion in the Roman Empire. On January 5th, the flag of the Dominion of Weddell raised over, Mackenzie City in the 1st Weddellean province of Mackenzie. The Wedellian armed forces was expanded to 1000 men to keep peace in the territories to the south and along the coast of the Weddell Sea. However, clashes did occur. The Penguin Wars (1937-1938) was a series of clashes between Pengiun hunters over hunting grounds. The settlements quickly became warring towns raiding each other in a kind of frozen tribal warfare. This saw direct intervention by the Weddellean government in 1937 but only ended the conflict in 1938 after both town leaders were executed by being thrown into the water of the Weddell Sea off the HMWS Sea Lion. Roosevelt also experienced an event like this but between miners. The army quickly crushed the feud and of the whole island of 1000+ people under martial law in 1939. Into the 1940s Weddellean troops crushed the feuds which popped up across the nation. However, the 1940s also had a series of small skirmishes and warning shots between Weddellean and Patagonian ships. The biggest ship in the Weddellean navy was a light cruiser known as the HMWS Greenland Shark. An incident did happen during the Australian War were the ship HMWS Walrus did stray a bit close to Estibordo for it to be confused with a Cygnian ship. Estibordo would repay the damage done after the war. The 1950s was a time of prosperity for the world in the after math of the Second Great War. More people came to Weddell searching for work, massive corporations were competing in the Ice breaking business which was the breaking down of glaciers for human habitation. Others were breaking the ice in the Weddell Sea. By 1960, the population reached 50,000 and Weddell voted for independence.
