The Republic of Nimba started in 1989 as a trade agreement between the Gio and Mano tribes in the north of former Liberia.
In 1996 Nimba was formed from these two tribal lands, named after the former County of Nimba in which the two tribes were based, it was joined by the Bassa tribe of coastal former Liberia (River Gee country) in 1998, Nimba spread further in 2004 to take in some of the western lands of Kpelle tribe (Bong and Grand Bassa Counties).
Development of the Federation of Liberia
With help from the West African Union, mostly that of the nation of Guniea who borders the nation to the north and later The Ivory Coast who borders to the Republic to the west. Talks began in 2010 to unite the Democratic Republic of Liberia and Nimba into the Federation of Liberia.
Both nations signed the Federal Agreement on the 31st of December 2011, with the Federation of Liberia coming into effect on the 1st January 2013.
On the 29th March 2012 a joint Federation/WAU statement announces the plans to take Suakoko and Zota Districts of Bong County, Lofa will provide 500 troops. The area will become part of Nimba until the establishment of the Federation of Liberia.
