History[]

Pre-Columbian

Archaeological evidence indicates that Florida was first inhabited by Paleo-Indians as early as 14,000 years ago. By the 16th Century and the earliest records, major Native American groups included the Calusa, the Apalachee, the Timucua, the Ais, the Tocobaga, and the Tequesta.

Colonization by Spain[]

Florida was the first part of the (former) continental United States to be colonized by Europeans (specifically, the Spanish). The first voyage to Florida is traditionally believed to be Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513, who named it La Florida after the flowering vegetation. The first Spanish colony there was founded in 1559 at modern-day Pensacola by Don Tristan de Luna y Arellano, but was abandoned in 1561 for a number of reasons.

(more to come later)

Florida gained de facto independence following the global Zombie outbreaks, with Reuben Askew becoming its first governor. The pretext for its declaration of independence was the fact that the Floridians allegedly did not wish to burden the U.S. with having to protect them. However, it is suspected that, in reality, their secession was fueled by a dissatisfaction with the central government. Many within Florida have expressed their desire to reunify with the U.S. after the end of the crisis.

Military[]

The Florida National Guard (FLNG) is charged with protecting the Republic of Florida from any threats. It is divided into three branches- the Florida Army National Guard (FARNG), the Florida Air National Guard (FANG), and the Florida Naval National Guard (FNNG).

After the global Zombie outbreaks, the Floridian government introduced mandatory conscription for all able-bodied men and women. Many pieces of technically obsolete equipment, such as the F-86 Sabre (modified by the FLNG), have served with distinction in the FLNG.

The FLNG is also well-known for its Defensive Special Operations Corps ("Black Ops") troops, many of whom have been deployed to the front lines in the Human-Zombie War. Black Ops troops are recruited from the various branches of the FLNG, and undergo extensive training. They are also known for being the world's only combat troops to wear helmets that cover their entire head, including the face. As such, they are frequently nicknamed "Black Hats" or "Black Helmets."
