The Republic of California consists of the former US states of California and Nevada. It is presently interested in acquiring Baja California from Mexico.

History[]

In 1846, California gained independence from Mexico a month before the Mexican-American War, and was later occupied by the US. In the first civil war most Californians stayed loyal to the Union. Veteran Fever had a relatively low infection rate in California, leading to the rapid growth of its economy as compared to the more infected states.

After the reorganisation of the United States, California gained a greater degree of autonomy. It gained control of its own foreign affairs and defence, and came to resemble a nation more than a state.

After the Final Civil War, California was one of the first states to declare independence from the collapsing United States, as the Republic of California. In the end of the war, California's control over Nevada was recognised, and during this time, California also acquired several former US territories in the Pacific Ocean, including Samoa, Guam, the Marshall Islands and Palau.

After the Mexican-Californian War, California experienced a land boom, as developers from across the many nations of North America bought land cheap, subdivided it, and gained profits. As a result, the Californian economy boomed. In the 1960s, political liberalism bloomed in California; proportional representation was introduced in the California Congress in 1963, and the following year Roger Traynor, the candidate of Californian Popular Front, a coalition of liberal, socialist and anarchist organisations, defeated incumbent President Richard Nixon in the 1964 presidential election. During his 4-year term the Californian economy boomed, while the nation became a haven for counter-culture movements from across the United States. In a 1966 referendum, the government changed from a presidential to a parliamentary system of government.

Since that time, California's economy has boomed, largely as a result of increased Asian immigration due to the Japanese conquest of China. As of 2008, California and Texas are the two major powers in North America.

2008 marked the election of Tom McClintock of the United Party to the presidency of California. President-elect McClintock has promised to obtain the province of Baja California from Mexico, under the grounds that Mexico has done a poor job administering the province and that the annexation of the province is a matter of national security.

Politics[]

California is a unitary parliamentary republic, with a directly elected president serving as head of the executive, but exercising only limited power. Term limits ensure that the president can only serve a single, 4-year term. The president is currently John Chen (Chinese name 鹰直尺) of the Libertarian Party of California, and the president-elect is currently Tom McClintock of the United Party.

The California Congress holds legislative powers, and is proportionally elected through the Single Transferable Vote system. The First Minister of California serves as head of the executive. Seven parties currently hold seats in the Californian Congress. The Californian Popular Front; comprising the Liberal Democratic Party, the Socialist Labor Party, the Green Party, and the Anarchist League; currently hold government in the California Congress, with Karen Bass of the Socialist Labor Party serving as First Minister. The other represented parties in the California Congress are the Libertarian Party, the anti-immigration nationalist National Republican Party and the conservative United Party.

Party representation in Congress breaks down to this:

Californian Popular Front, 43% of the seats

United Party, 30% of the seats

Libertarian Party, 15% of the seats

National Republican Party, 12% of the seats
