The Reman Empire, commonly just called Reme, is a nation on the continent of Borealia, with the nation of Borealia to its west, the nation of Mexaca to its south, and the nations of Algonquia and Arcadia to its north.

Reme is one of four states in the New World that is mostly aborigine, the others being Algonquia, Mexaca, and Andea. Before the tragic events of the 21st century, the Reman Empire was one of the most powerful states in Borealia and a major influence in global affairs. The nation is currently occupied by a variety of different peacekeeping forces with differing agendas, leaving Reme's future uncertain.

History[]

Foundation[]

The first settlement on the southern East Coast of Borealia was the settlement of Banche Esterno. Founded by a small Italian trading company, the settlement turned a small profit by trading with native Borealians. However, when Italy was conquered by Spain shortly after the colony's foundation, Italian ownership was finished. The colony first went into Irish hands before falling into the hands of the Romans, who had just established the city of Reme to the north.

The colony would eventually grow over the next few centuries, absorbing rival colonies of the Austrians and Prussians and expanding its influence and control amongst the native Borealians further inland. However, the Romans were unable to remove the colonial presence of Hamburg and Bavaria, whose colonies lasted to the 20th century, and the Remans were hemmed in by Scandinavians to the north and the French to the west.

Creation of a Nation[]

One of the major victories of the colony was the conquest of the Cherokee, who had established a powerful state in the inland of the continent. While relations were peaceful, tensions increased because of Reman expansionism and the failure of the Cherokee nobility to submit before the Roman crown, as agreed upon in the mid-17th century. The Cherokee were forced to submit, but this had substantial consequences for the colonies. The sheer number of natives absorbed by that conquest tipped the balance, and within a few years the Reman Revolt broke out. Because of the concurrent Roman Revolution, colonial authorities were not able to restore Imperial rule. The Reman Republic was born.

After the war, Reme spent most of its post-war years centralizing authority and creating economic policies to make the nation stand out in future development. However, the threat of the Illuminist Roman Empire invading to reclaim the lost land still loomed for the Reman government. So, Reme joined the New Munich pact consisting of the Union of Borealia and Algonquia. France, who had just lost a majority of its Californian territories to the Union of Borealia, needed to figure out a way to protect its last possessions on the continent. So, in order to protect its interests in Borealia, the Kingdom of France and Reme signed the Treaty of Neoloás, which ceded the authority of the colonies of Cahokie and Rouennelle to Reme in exchange for mutual protection from an outside threat. This treaty remained in effect until the French Communist Party dis-established the nation in the early 20th century.

Establishment of the Empire[]

Jayson Christakos

Jayson Christakos, the first Emperor of the Reman Empire.

In 1848, conservative protests broke out in many cities across the Reman Republic, just as they did in many countries across Europe. Reme was the only nation in the New World to be stricken by such unrest. The protesters demanded more conservative government and laws, much as the rest of the protests in Europe demanded. In particular, many protesters demanded a return to the various monarchies and chiefdoms that were such a crucial component of the native nations and the war of independence.

Unwilling to disperse its citizens for fear of inciting riots and further violence, the government gathered and debated the merits of re-establishing the nobility and crowning a monarch. Determined that a monarch would be unable to take absolute power in the face of a parliament and president, the government decided that a constitutional nobility would pose no major threat to the nation or its people. The government announced that all titles held before the war of independence would be restored and that a monarch would be elected by the people before the year was over. After several months of campaigning, nobleman Jayson Christakos was elected by popular majority. Christakos was crowned on Christmas Day. He chose the title of Emperor, believing that Reme was now an equal of Rome and thus deserving of the same respect.

During the years following establishment the Reman Empire, The native Reman population fell discontented with major ethnic European nations that surrounded the nations. Mostly this is because state-aligned press made it seem that other nations were preparing for war with Reme, to dispose of the elected monarch. Most representatives in parliament also leading up to the with the war with Arcadia wished for a greater cooperation with Algonquia to the north. So, when war broke out in 1851, Remans were called to arms in the name of protecting their nation and capital from devious Arcadians, and to call for the strengthening of the empire. Fighting lasted for three years, until the Arcadian government agreed on unconditional surrender. From then on the Reman government would split Arcadia down the OTL Saint Lawrence river.

After the war, Algonquia ethnically cleansed a majority of its population to discourage revolts and separatism in the area (though this did not seem to work). The United Nations considers this as an act genocide, although the Reman government failed to recognize it until 2003, when the issue amounted after the 150 year anniversary of the Arcadian War.

Thanks to the incorporation of Arcadia, the economy boomed. Textiles factories that were restricted by the Arcadian market weren't importing large quantities from neighboring Reme, and Arcadian textiles usually didn't sell to Reman markets. Because of these two restrictions coming off, the economy gained a lot of ground to neighboring countries, eventually surpassing them in their GDP. Things were looking good for the Reman economy and for the future.

Reman Golden Age[]

After the Arcadian War, Reme continued to show its power and growth to the world. Following the fall of the Kingdom of France in 1884, Reme annulled the Treaty of Neolías where taxes were paid to the French government, and established a protectorate among its holdings. Reme also formed an alliance with its former overlord due to the links of cultural similarity. During this time frame leading to the outbreak of World War One, the Reman government established the basics of what would be trickle down economics. The Mayor of Miaymi noticed that when he gave tax cuts to the rich, they were able to invest and create more companies. Thus, would create more jobs and a higher revenue all around, leading to far more money for the Reman government. After hearing this proposal, the Reman Emperor decided to give it a try. The Reman GDP boomed and allowed the expansion of the budget, which gave Reme the capability to produce ironclads for the navy. Also, because of these financial reforms, many new revolutionary projects took foot in Reme, such as the Franqi brothers, who created the first mechanical flying machine

However, complete free-market capitalism came to a grinding halt in 1908, when the Syrian Revolt happened in the Roman Empire. Seeing the aggression made by the People's Entente and Grand Tripartite, Reme went to war with both of the leagues, with Spain, Croatia, Germany, and Scandinavia against France, Poland, Russia, the Caliphate, India, and Japan. The war dragged on for a long seven years with Rome and her allies coming out on top.
