The Red Army (Рабоче-крестьянская Красная армия; РККА, or Raboche-krest'yanskaya Krasnaya armiya; RKKA. Shortened in Russian to Красная aрмия; KA, in English: Red Army) was the military force of the Bolshevik movement in the former Russian Empire, which took part in the Russian Civil War of 1917-21. The Red Army was hampered throughout the war by poor leadership and defections, as well as a lack of good weaponry. It was disbanded in 1921 after the White Army emerged victorious in the war.
