[edit] History

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the communist Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ) lauched a series of terrorist attacks and hostage-takings throughout Quebec. In 1971, with arrival of the Canadian army, the FLQ started guerrilla attacks and killed over 900 Canadian troops. The war continued until 1973, when Marc Carbonneau declared the People's Republic of Quebec as an independent state. Communist nations throughout the world sent aid, and English Canada decided to leave Quebec saying they were "better among English-speakers only". From 1973 to 1995, FLQ leaders (mostly wanted terrorists) ruled Quebec as a leftist military state. In 1995, a military coup overthrew the government and Quebec became a democratic republic. The Presidency is now a rotating posts between the provinces of Quebec.

[edit] Government and Politics

The Presidency of the Republic of Quebec is since 1995 rotating every 6 months between the provinces. Each province's Provincial Council elects a candidate to become the President. The President (while in office) has supreme power as commander-in-chief. He may dissolve the National Assembly has he wishes. The National Assembly, the legislative branch is chosen by an electoral congress (like in OTL USA) made up of electors from each province chosen by the population. The only moment where the population votes directly is during the few referendums (1 held since 1995). This has become a subject of much deabte, as many Quebecers call for a revision to the constitution. The main political parties are the Parti Quebecois (PQ) Mouvement pour le Québec Libre (Movement for a Free Quebec, former FLQ, MQL).
