The Protectorate of Aceh (German: Protektorat Aceh) is a nation on the the northern end of the island of Sumatra. It was established in the first decade of the eighteenth century, after considerable pressure was placed on it by the Duchy of Hamburg, whose merchants had been operating out of it, and the nearby Friedrich Islands for over 150 years.
The flag of the Aceh Protectorate features the Ducal flag of Hamburg in the canton of a red field. In the lower right quadrant is a saber tilted at a forty-five degree angle. The saber is identical to that found on the flag of the former Sultanate of Aceh, however tilted to distinguish it from its past self. The Islamic crescent and star that were also present on the former flag, but were removed by their new christian protectors.
