Pope Peter II was the Papal name of the former Cardinal Giovanni Benelli (12th May, 1921 - 17th November 2000) of Florence. He was elected in the Papal Conclave of 1981 after the assassination of his predecessor John Paul II. Only a few months into his Papacy, he suffered a heart attack but his life was saved at the Agostini Gemelli University Clinic. However, although he continued as Pope for almost two decades, his poor health throughout that time meant that he probably paid little part in the revolutionary decisions made concerning the doctrines and practices of the Church of that period. He also presided over a steady decline in religious sentiment which meant that the Church was much less influential in world affairs than previously. Another feature of his reign was the radical improvement in relations with the Anglican Church
