Pakistan, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Urdu: اسلامی جمہوریۂ پاکستان) is a defunct nation, formerly located in South Asia. The territory of Pakistan was comprised of the modern-day nations of Balochistan, West Punjab, Baltistan, and the northernmost province of Sindhustan. Its capital was located at Islamabad. Created from the northwestern portion of British India in 1947, Pakistan's largely Muslim populace almost immediately came into conflict with neighboring India (over the division of the state of Kashmir) in the indecisive First Indo-Pakistani War that lasted from 1947 to 1948. For the next eighteen years, the two remained in state of uneasy peace, concentrating on building up their young nations. In August 1965, Pakistan broke the uneasy peace and attacked an India still weakened from its defeat in the Sino-Indian War three years earlier, hoping to gain total domination over Kashmir before the Indian military could react. In the first several months of the war, the Pakistani armed forces achieved most of their goals, had Indian troops pinned down in the Kashmir cities of Jammu and Srinagar by January 1966, and the Indian government seriously contemplating ceding control of Kashmir to Pakistan. But, India's military had a new "ace-in-the hole": a nuclear bomb. On March 13, an Indian Air Force Hawker Siddeley HS-748 deployed a 70 kiloton nuclear device over the northwestern districts of the city of Jammu, where a Pakistani division consisting of nearly 12,000 troops - who were preparing for a strike deeper into Kashmir - had moved in following the discovery that Indian forces had unexpectedly retreated from the city proper. The detonation leveled all structures within a 3 mile radius, with the city west of the Tawi River simply ceasing to exist. In addition, the EMP effects from the blast disabled all electronics within a 20-mile radius, and badly injured another 2000 Pakistani troops and several hundred Indian Army stragglers as well.

Over the next year - unable to recover from the shock of the March 13 attack - Pakistan's military suffered constant defeats and setbacks as Indian Army troops rapidly reclaimed lost territory in Kashmir and entered Pakistan's West Punjab Province in December 1966. From January to February 1967, Indian Army troops surrounded Islamabad and fought tens of thousands of Pakistani Army troops to the death before the government of Pakistan reluctantly acknowledged imminent defeat after a series of desertions and coups across the nation. In March 1967, the government of Pakistan was dissolved, its territory divided amongst the new nations of Baltistan, West Punjab, and Balochistan, while Sindhustan simply annexed the remainder of former southeast Pakistan. West Punjab officially declared itself the successor state to Pakistan in 1968.
