[edit] Role in the First World War
The Ottoman Empire had been in decline for nearly 200 years before the First World War. And Germany had promised lands that they had lost over the years and more.
Turkey was at first unable to stop the British advancements, but Bulgaria and Germany managed to send additional soldiers to help and they managed to push them back and in 1915, managed to secure a stable enough line they were able to invade Egypt. The wars end gave the Turks back Egypt, and all British territories in the Arabian peninsula.
[edit] Interwar Years
The Ottoman Empire had a massive wave of food shortages from 1918-1926. Then the United States sent food and supplies to Turkey. And Germany helped them rebuild their Army. And Turkey wanted to attack the Italian colony of Lybia to regain the last of its lost African territory, but the other Central Power members refused to help them, and Turkey feared she could not win that kind of war one her own.
