The Ottoman Republic, Osmanic Republic or Ottoman State (Ottoman Turkish: دولتْ علیّه عثمانیّهDevlet-i Âliye-yi Osmâniyye, Modern Turkish: Osmanlı İmparatorluğu or Osmanlı Devleti), also known by its contemporaries as the Turkish Republic or Turkey, was a republic that was formed in 1912.
The republic was at the centre of the Balkans and middle-eastern conflicts during the Royal War. With Istanbul is its capital city, and it controls a vast area around the eastern Mediterranean. The Ottoman Republic was, an empire in all but name. The sultan became the president (for life) and the Grand Vizier became prime minister (for life). It became a republic due to pressure from France and the U.S and Russian and British expansionism.
