The Republic of Otoewa, Otoewa, is a small authoritarian republic in North-Central Leifia. It is bordered by Omahaghenu, Baxojeyuh, Niuachiland, Kawlegawaho and Mexica. The capital is Chono Ca Pe and the population is around 52,000.

The official language is Otoe.

The Head of State is General Shaumonkeusse.

Officially the currency is the Omahaghenu Me-Um which was once the dominant currency on the Missouri River. However this has not been minted in years. The Isanyathi Hinah (IYH) is the de facto currency in everyday use.

History[]

Closely related to the Omahaan and Poncan tribes further upstream the Missouri River, the Otoe first entered the historical narrative as one of the 1st Aniyunwiyan Empire's neighbours. Initially the small tribe was rewarded by the Aniyunwiyans for keeping their stretch of the river free of banditry but slowly the Aniyunwiyans made the Otoe's small tribal land on the western bank of the Missouri part of their empire, building a magnificent castle at Chono Ca Pe. Following the death of Edoha in 1275 one of his many, many children, Austenaco, rallied the Otoe and neighbours under his banner and attempted to build a successor state along the Missouri with Chono Ce Pe his capital. This lasted for 5 years before Austenaco was murdered by one of his own wives. The Otoe returned to a quiet life on the fringes of the post-imperial anarchy consuming the old Aniyunwiyan empire.

Almost the entire male Otoe population was killed in battle with the Mexic in April 1599 at the Battle of Kaw River. There was a significant mercenary army only 10 miles away, awaiting word from Otoe scouts, but they had been intercepted and killed. The mercenaries who sped to the battlefield arrived only to chase off the Mexic and bring the dead home to be buried with tribal rites. The widowed Princess of Otoewa, Rantchewaime, bestowed permanent membership of the tribe to the entire mercenary host.

During the First Mexic-Leifian War Chono Ce Pe was besieged and its attempted relief was the first large-scale engagement for the Álengsk-Aniyunwiyan army in the war. Most of the Otoe tribe proper had already vacated into what is now Inokia, where they would remain until the closing days of the war.

Otoewa would remain a dependency of Aniyunwiya until the 1870s when it was given independence. Direct authoritarian rule by the restored royal family did not last long. The incompetent prince was ousted in 1905, and after a short occupation by Aniyunwiya, a democratic regime was established. Continued political unrest would eventually result in a relatively liberal military dictatorship. The native Otoe people are usually in the minority in the country; they are outnumbered by foreign soldiers who maintain large garrisons. The state is mostly agricultural and the economy mostly reliant on the supply of the foreign garrisons.

Unlike the Omahaan and Poncan, Otoewa does not claim any Mexic land to the west. This concession allowed the formation of an anti-Mexic alliance in the area, the initial talks foundering on competing claims.

Government[]

Otoewa is governed by a single-chambered council. There are elections but the candidate lists are controlled by the military.
