President Kennedy survived, but to his great embarassment was wheelchair-bound by the end of his second term of office. He lived to see the moon landings, securing the funding necessary to create a moon base and make other space stations possible. Nixon wasn't in office to create the bungling Space-Shuttle, and instead, NASA developed a multi-pronged approach to space, creating the shuttle to move persons, heavy rockets to lift payloads.
Space thus became the new high ground, and escalatio continued with the USSR to the present day.
