The Republic of Oregon, also known simply as Oregon is a constitutional presidential republic comprised of the western section of the former US state of the same name. Formed shortly after the Yellowstone eruption, the Republic of Oregon became one of the first state governments to transition to a full nation on the west coast. Its capital is Salem, and its largest city is Portland. It is bordered by the nation of Jefferson to the south.
Oregon was a founding member of the supranational organization known as the Cascadia Alliance, an alliance of states located in the American northwest. Since its founding the alliance has grown to include much of the American Northwest.
Situated on the far western edge of the Yellowstone eruption blast radius, Oregon was heavily hit by debris and dust following the Yellowstone eruption. Much of the state was destroyed, with wide spread destruction spreading as far west as the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. The sky over the west coast was heavily congested with dust, leading to the death of thousands in cities such as Salem and Portland.
The state government of Oregon assembled for an emergency meeting in Salem, the state's capital following the eruption. Almost immediately a state of emergency was declared. Any available local national guard units were called to assist in the damage control, as citizens from the eastern half of the states began a massive migration west, overwhelming the few Oregon cities on the coast.
The nearby Bonneville Dam located just east of Portland was under construction at the time of the eruption, and was badly damaged in the wreckage following the eruption, and any hope of finishing the construction would be delayed months if not years.
As the situation in Oregon continued to get more desperate, the local government met again, this time to consider the creation of an independent state. After brief discussion the Republic of Oregon was officially founded on 13 June 1938. The city of Salem was designated as the new republic's capital housing the future legislature and president. Elections were scheduled to take place on election day 1940, with the current governor and state legislature serving as their terms as provisional leaders of the country.
With the help of the national guard units in the area, Oregon would slowly gain control over much of its former state territory. The nation used to rocky, thickly-forested wilderness of nearby national forests as a nature border on the east, hugging the coast to the west. By late 1938 contact had been established with the nearby towns of the Oregon coast, effectively reuniting the people of Oregon under the republic.
The Republic of Oregon would divert the majority of its attention to the north and west, where rich coastal towns supplied the majority of its food supply. Very little contact would be made with the towns of the far south, near the California border, where the locals lived as loose collection of survivor states allied with the government in Salem.
Contact with Jefferson
The state of Jefferson was first proposed by Gilbert Gable, mayor of Port Oxford, Oregon in October of 1941. He believed that by forming an independent state in the region he would be able to consolidate control over the region and better manage the many survivor communities in the area. By November the idea had caught on and several communities in northern California and Oregon agreed to a possible union, with a constitutional presidential republic government similar to the former United States. By this time the Oregon counties of Curry, Josephine, Jackson, and Klamath, and the California counties of Del Norte, Siskiyou, and Modoc had pledged allegiance to this new state.
On November 27, 1941, with talks stalling, a group of young men brandishing hunting rifles and other weapons, stopped all traffic along routes toward Salem. The group, billed as the Army of Jefferson, handed out copies of the Jefferson Constitution, and stopped trade going into Oregon. Finally on 1 December 1941 the Republic of Oregon relinquished its claims to southern Oregon, believing that the independent state of Jefferson would be more beneficial to the local population, to which Oregon had little control over. Since then the Republic of Jefferson has retained strong diplomatic relations with the Republic of Oregon, becoming one of the founding members of the Cascadia Alliance, a supranational organization of states located in the American northwest.
