In the Battle of the Somme, in October, 1916, a German dispatch runner was struck and killed by shrapnel when a shell went off in the dugout he was in. His name was Adolf Hitler. His death was irrelevant to the German war machine, and the war continued to its conclusion. The Treaty of Versailles still crippled the German Empire. Into the weak, desperate post-war Germany, any number of ideologies could have taken root. Meanwhile, in Munich, a small political party, the German Workers Party was formed. It was no different from any other and without a charismatic leader to give it direction, it swiftly collapsed.
