The Sultanate of Oman (سلطنة عُمان) is an Ibadi Muslim state in the Persian Gulf, and a vassal of the Jaffarid Sultanate.

History

Religion

The dominant religion in Oman is the Ibadi school of Islam, which was founded 20 years after the death of Muhammad, predating both Sunni and Shia denominations in the technical sense. Ibadi Muslims primarily live in the Sultanate of Oman and parts of East Africa, and are generally more tolerant to other religions than Sunnis and Shiites. For most of its history, the Ibadi denomination has remained isolated within Oman, and its beliefs remain a mystery to outsiders.

Army

The first standing army of Oman was established in 1618 as the Royal Army of Masqat and Oman, for the purposes of better military cooperation between Masqat and Oman. Although the Royal Army was disbanded in 1672, Oman continues to maintain a small standing army, as well as the original Palace Guard of Masqat.

Navy

Oman once boasted a powerful navy of over 100 ships that dominated the Indian Ocean trade. Since its subjugation by the Rashidun in 1616, Oman's navy has been increasingly eclipsed by the Swahili and Arab fleets. Most of the navy shifted their allegiance to the Qamarid separatists in 1673, along with Oman's colonial possessions in 1675. By the early 1700s, Omani naval power was restricted to the Strait of Hormuz, and the colonies fell under Swahili influence.
