North Borneo (Malay: Borneo Utara) is a country located at the northeast of Borneo Island. It is bordered by Indonesia to the south and by Sarawak to the southwest. It also shares a maritime border with Moroland to the northeast. North Borneo has a territory with the area of 73,631 sq km. The capital of North Borneo is Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton. North Borneo is a Commonwealth realm with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and a member of the Commonwealth Confederation. North Borneo is often referred to as "The Land Below The Wind", a phrase used by seafarers in the past to describe lands south of the typhoon belt.
