North America was one of the worst hit continents during Doomsday, mainly due to the presence of the United States of America. As such, it is severely depopulated in many regions and the nations here are mostly rump states formed from former countries or country subdivisions. Since much of the interior is lawless, North America can be divided into several political regions.
Eastern United StatesEdit
This region was the hardest hit of all, its population centers, government installations, and military bases drawing heavy fire from Soviet missiles. Cuba has sent some expeditions into the southeast, and Brazil and other South American nations have explored the coasts farther north. The World Census and Reclamation Bureau also sent scouts to explore the southern portion of the region, and discovered a number of city-states.
In much of the region, and especially in much of the northeastern United States, almost nothing larger than a small town has survived.
However, there are some exceptions.
The Virginian Republic is a former military dictatorship in the Appalachian Mountains organized by U.S. Army officials and the 101st Airborne, now a democratic republic.
The Commonwealth of Kentucky is a nation based around Fort Knox that recently has become known to the world. Nearby, the city-state of Portland, Tennessee, was found to have survived in conjuction with a few towns in the surrounding border counties.
The WCRB expedition recently discovered a number of smaller nations; of particular note are ones centered in Asheville, North Carolina; and Morristown, Tennessee. Further south a city-state was found centered in Hattiesburg, Mississipp.
Great Lakes and St. Lawrence RiverEdit
Divided between former Canada and the United States, this region was hit fairly hard in Doomsday. Destroyed cities and bases include Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cincinnati, Toronto, CFB North Bay, Ottawa, Quebec City, Montreal, Halifax, Portland, the Bath Iron Works, Plattsburgh Air Force Base, the SAC base and naval shipyards in Portsmouth and the Loring Air Force Base.
Several states have risen in this region. The two most powerful are the Canadian Remainder Provinces and the Republic of Superior. Less powerful states are Saguenay (a breakaway nation that Canada has consistently claimed), Aroostook (a nation created from the remnants of the US state of Maine), Vermont (a neutral nation in former New England), Thunder Bay (a fascist state in Ontario), and the Republic of Wisconsin (a nation aligned with Superior). The area around the cities of Quebec and Montreal, though claimed by several nations, remains a no-man's land controlled by a group of warlords referred to as the "Lawrence Raiders."
This region is currently undergoing a war between Canada and Saguenay. Superior has also declared war on Canada, supporting Saguenay. Aroostook, torn between the two sides, and Vermont have remained neutral.
The Prairie region consists of an inland region of the former U.S. and Canada and until very recently had been the most isolated from the outside world. It is notable for the large population of nomads who follow their herds across the Great Plains.
The North American Union dominates the region. It was formed from a number of local survivor communities, provisional governments, and a few tribes and nomadic groups.
Contact was recently established with this region following an expedition from the Municipal States of the Pacific.
City-states in Joplin and Cape Girardeau, Missouri, were recently discovered as part of a World Census and Reclamation Bureau-sponsored expedition into the area considered to have been the southern United States.
This region includes the former Pacific states of the US (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California), as well as the former Canadian province of British Colombia. This region has enjoyed the closest contact with American survivor communities in Oceania, as well as to the developed nations of the South American west coast. The major states in the region are Alaska, the Republic of Victoria, Chumash Republic, Santa Cruz, Ventura, and the Municipal States of the Pacific, the last of which was founded as a joint nation-building project of the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand and the South American Confederation. Smaller states include the Republic of San Juan and the Republic of New Caledonia.
