The Principality of Nisenanland, Nisenanland, is a small authoritarian monarchy in Western Leifia. It is bordered by Chinese Leifia, Western Maiduland, Maiduland, Waashiland and South Yokutland. It has no direct coastline but has long shorefront on the northern side of the Miwok Delta with easy access to Great Bay and the Roasjoinn beyond. The capital is Sulapy and the population is around 462,000.

The Head of State is Prince Sam-Yeto III.

The official language is Nisenan, which is mutually intelligible to Maidu.

The currency is the Chinese Leifian Yuan (CLY).

History[]

Like the other tribes of Western Leifia the Nisenan lived in small settlements, engaged in hunter-gatherer activity, and essentially formed a loose collection of allied tribes only slightly removed from their neighbours the Maidu. The introduction of settled agriculture into the Miwok valley from 14th century would utterly transform the tribe; the previously tiny villages exploded in population. Influenced by Álengsk traders and, to a degree aping the Ohlene, the Nisenan would form a unitary state to protect its good farmland with a relatively well-equipped army and forts ringing its lands. A formalised religion soon followed.

This new semi-feudal state would briefly shine before being subjugated by the Patwin League in around 1515. The League gathered together the small local nation states and built an informal empire from the Natinixwean border to the Xakxwet River. Meanwhile Nisenanland was reduced to an agricultural backwater, absorbing much of the over-population from its neighbours.

As Patwin dominance faltered in the 18th century the empire was torn apart with the Wars of Patwin Partition which were largely driven by a suddenly confident Ohlonemark. The shell of the Patwin state would be taken over by Chinese administrators who would eventually resurrect the League in a less-onerous form. Nisenanland would regain its independence though it remains closely allied to Chinese Leifia.

Sulapy would grow from small town to a significant entrepot, handling the agricultural produce of the interior as well as gold and other minerals extracted from the mountains in ever-greater quantities. Despite a brief attempt to build its own fleet it would lose out to the more strategically placed cities of Romonan in Ohlonemark and Chinese-run Lingyu.

The extensive wetlands along its border with South Yokutland are a prime breeding ground for malaria and, despite improved medicine and efforts to tame the area, outbreaks of malaria are all too common.

Government[]

Nisenanland is governed by a small unelected chamber made up of the monarch (currently Prince Sam-Yeto III), hereditary peers, military and religious leaders. There are democratically elected local officials though the lists for election are vetted and vetoed by the unelected lords.
