Krestinsky was born in Mogilev, Russian Empire. In 1903, he joined the Social Democrats and took the side of the Bolshevik wing.
After the February Revolution toppled the czarist government, he proved himself a capable organizer and was elected to the party's Central Committee on August 3, 1917. On August 16, 1918, he was made People's Commissar of Finance.
