New Portsmouth is the capital city of Vancouver and encompasses all of Vancouver Island off NAU Pacific coast. The city has a population of about 1,170,844 while the metropolitan area of Greater Portsmouth Area, has a population of 2,340,893 making it the 5th most populous island urban region.
After more than 50 years as a airport community, the New Portsmouth area in the mid-20th century contained some of the last undeveloped land near Strait of Juan de Fuca. It then began to experience rapid population growth, much of it coming from veterans returning from Great War. New Portsmouth then continued its aggressive expansion during the 1950s and 1960s by annexing more land area. The rapid growth of the high-technology and electronics industries further accelerated the transition to an urbanized metropolitan area.
Known as the "City of Gardens", New Portsmouth is an attractive city and a popular tourism destination with a thriving technology sector that has risen to be its largest revenue-generating private industry. The city also has one of the largest vertical farming system in North America.The city has a large non-local student population, who come to attend the University of New Portsmouth, Camosun College, Royal Roads University, the Sooke Schools International Programme and the College of Performing Arts. New Portsmouth is very popular with boaters with its beautiful and rugged shorelines and beaches. Northern part of New Portsmouth is also popular with retirees, who come to enjoy the temperate and usually snow-free climate of the area as well as the usually relaxed pace of the city.
New Portsmouth is an Aerotropolis Hub, second largest on the west coast.
