[edit] History
The New England Federation was formed in the year following the dissolution of the United States. The original three states, Massachussetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut agreed to sign the Hartford Convention, in acordance with the ideas of Alexander Hamilton's Federalist Papers.
Rhode Island orignally only agreed to a treaty of alliance with New England, but joined the federation later that year, during the Vermont War.
Vermont was admitted as a state soon after the conclusion of the Vermont War, in 1792.
In 1795, Virginia declared war with New England over its claims to the region northwest of the Ohio river. It was able to maintain the Massachusetts claim to the area with British assistance by 1797. However, due to the distance between New England propper, and its claims, it was never able to maintain full control over the area. It also gained joint administration with the British of the area north of its claim and to the east of Lake Michigan.
In 1802, New England exchanged the western half of its claim to the Northwest Territory for favourable border concessions on the Maine-New Brunswick border and sole ownership of the jointly-administered area to the east of Lake Michigan.
Virginia declared war with New England and Britain again in 1811 over the New England claim, due to the large numbers of Virginian settlers in that area. However, in the peace settlement of 1814, New England once again kept its hold over the area with British assistance.
Maine was admitted as a state in 1816.
New England sold the remaining part of its claim to the Northwest Territory to Britain in 1819.
