The National Symbols of Livonia are emblems and flags that represent various aspects of Livonia in different ways. These are all officially issued by the chief of heraldry of the Holy Roman Empire, and they are all flown or displayed officially by various members of the Livonian stated.

Flags

Prior to the coronation of Duke Maunas in 16__, the Duchy of Livonia had one official flag. As part of Maunas' attempt to segregate ducal from national property during his campaign for liberalization of the Duchy, he is credited as being responsible for convincing the chief of heraldry in the Holy Roman Empire to create the two separate flags for Livonia; they are the National Flag of the Duchy of Livonia and the Ducal Flag of the Duke of Livonia.

The blazon of the National Flag officially reads as "Or a fess gules, over all an escutcheon of the National Coat of Arms of Livonia."

This roughly translates to a horizontal flag of three bands, the top and bottom being golden-yellow, and the center being red, with the National Coat of Arms of Livonia being positioned at the center of the flag.

This flag is flown over any and all public buildings that, while not belonging directly to the Duke of Livonia or his family, still are said to belong to the nation of Livonia. The flag is prominently displayed at the Riga mint of Reichstalers, flown beneath the flag of the Holy Roman Empire.

Ducal Flag of Livonia

The blazon of the Ducal Flag of Livonia officially reads as "Or a fess gules, over all an escutcheon of the Ducal Coat of Arms of Livonia."

This roughly translates to a flag of three horizontal bands, the top and bottom being golden-yellow, and the center being red, with the Ducal Coat of Arms of Livonia being positioned at the center of the flag.

This flag is seen flown over all property owned by the Duke of Livonia and the royal house, as well as most military installations in the nation, since the Duke is also in charge of all military affairs of the Duchy.

Former Flag of Livonia

The original flag, which can still sometimes be seen flowing in historical sites, has an official blazon that reads: "Or a fess gules, a pale dexter gules, over all an escutcheon of the Ducal Coat of Arms of Livonia." During the time in which the flag was flown (when there was no distinction between the particular coat of arms), the blazon read "Or a fess gules, a pale dexter gules, over all an escutcheon of the Coat of Arms of Livonia."

The rough translation of this flag is a flag with three horizontal bands as well as one three vertical bands, with the bands being located more at the left side (from the viewer's perspective). The horizontal bands are, from top to bottom, yellow-gold, maroon, and yellow-gold. The vertical bands are, from left to right, yellow-gold, maroon, and yellow-gold. At the intersection of the vertical and horizontal maroon bands, the Ducal Coat of Arms of Livonia is placed.

Coat of Arms

With the creation of a second set of national symbols in 16__, under the oversight of Duke Maunas, the former Coat of Arms of Livonia (which was synonymous with the Coat of Arms of the House Vaalgamaast, from which the coat of arms was inspired) became the Lesser Ducal Coat of Arms.

Lesser National Coat of Arms

The Lesser National Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Livonia is one of three national coats of arms that can be used interchangeably to represent the nation of Livonia. While the most basic of the three coats of arms, the Lesser National Coat of Arms is probably the most used due to its simplicity and relative easiness to reproduce.

The official blazon of the Lesser National Coat of Arms is "Quarterly I. Gules, three lions passant guardant Argent; II. Argent, stag statant Gules; III. Argent, lion rampant to sinister Gules; IV. Gules, a griffin rampant to dexter with sword Argent."

This approximately means that the Lesser National Coat of Arms is split into four quadrants; the first and fourth are red with silver figures while the second and third are silver with red figures. The first quadrant has three lions (the symbol of Estonia), the second quadrant has a moose (the symbol of House Vaalgamaast), the third quadrant has a lion (the symbol of Courland), and the fourth quarter has a griffin (they symbol of Livonia Proper).

The Middle National Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Livonia is one of three heraldic coats of arms that represent the nation of Livonia. While more complicated than the Lesser National Coat of Arms, the Middle Coat of Arms is still significantly less developed than the Greater National Coat of Arms.

The Middle National Coat of Arms is different than the Lesser National Coat of Arms only by the inclusion of a ducal crown on top of the escutcheon of the Lesser National Coat of Arms.

The official blazon of the Middle National Coat of Arms is "TEXT OF BLAZON GOES HERE."

Greater National Coat of Arms

The Greater National Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Livonia is the most elaborate and grandiose of the National Coats of Arms of the Duchy of Livonia. The complicated nature of the Greater National Coat of Arms makes it the least used of the available coats of arms.

The blazon of the Greater National Coat of Arms is "BLAZON TEXT WILL GO HERE."

The blazon, or official description of the coat of arms, can be simplified to describe the content of the Greater National Cour of Arms. The actual escutcheon of the Coat of Arms is split into four quadrants; the first and fourth are red with silver figures while the second and third are silver with red figures. The first quadrant has three lions, the second quadrant has a moose, the third quadrant has a lion, and the fourth quarter has a griffin. The escutcheon is surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. All of this is then mounted onto a red mounting that is topped with a Ducal Crown.

The Lesser Ducal Coat of Arms is the simplest personal Coat of Arms of the Duke of Livonia, who has always, so far, also been the head of House Vaalgamaast.

It is currently unknown whether or not the Ducal Coat of Arms would be altered should the royal house of Livonia be changed to another family.

The official blazon of the Lesser Ducal Coat of Arms is "Gules, stag's head to dexter Tawny, over all an escutcheon of party per fess, in chief Azure, a demi-sun Or; in base Argent, a lion rampant to sinister Gules impaling Gules, a griffin rampant to dexter with sword Argent."

Greater Ducal Coat of Arms

The Greater Ducal Coat of Arms is the most elaborate coat of arms of the reigning head of the House Vaalgamaast, who have traditionally held the position of Duke of Livonia.

The design of the Greater Ducal Coat of Arms draws from traditional Russian styles of heraldry, as the House Vaalgamaast had their heraldic symbols granted by a Russian heraldic artist from Lithuania in the early 1300s, before their ancestral homeland came to be in the Holy Roman Empire.

The official blazon of the Greater Ducal Coat of Arms, in Western heraldic terminology, is "Gules, stag's head to dexter Tawny, over all an escutcheon of party per fess, in chief Azure, a demi-sun Or; in base Argent, a lion rampant to sinister Gules impaling Gules, a griffin rampant to dexter with sword Argent WITH RIBBONED LAURELS AND TOPPED WITH CROWN."
