National Amazons (Day of Glory)

A women auxiliary to the National Guard, the National Amazons was founded in 1793 after the Convention dismissed female "followers" of the army. While some were family members of soldiers, others actualy fought alongside males. The organisation, founded by Pauline Léon, intended to get around the ban by being set up along the lines of one of the many political clubs prevalent at the time.

Was abolished in the early 20th century and its member absorbed into the now mixed national guard at the same time as the abolition of the ban in the military forces of woman joining up. Some its early leaders were Théroigne de méricourt, Claire Lacombe and former journalist Louise Robert
