A motto is a phrase meant to formally summarize the general motivation or intention of a social group or organization. While mottoes can be found in any language, the majority of mottoes tend to be in Latin, due to its traditional role in Western culture.

Oftentimes, nations and alliances have a set motto, which can then be in the official language of the nation or organization, or in some cases (as with the United Kingdom) in a completely different language.

  • United States - "E Pluribus Unum," or "In God We Trust"
  • United Kingdom - Dieu et mon droit
