The Mongolian Expedition, as it is popularly known, was an attempt by the Empire of Japan to conquer Mongolia the resources of Mongolia and place Japanese forces closer to the critical Trans-Siberian Railway, if future Japanese-Soviet hostilities ever broke out. It ended after the Battles of Khalkhyn Gol, in which the Japanese were victorious, but it further dissuaded them from attempting to expand into Mongolia. This conflict was part of the wider Soviet-Japanese border wars that had been occurring off and on throughout the 1930s.
