Mobile Suit Gundam (Jap.: 機動戦士ガンダム) is a famous Fuji Dawn manga. It was based on a 1979 anime series, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. The original series ran for 43 episodes.

In culture before Doomsday

Conception

Originally, Nippon Sunrise made Super Robot anime, such as Reideen the Brave and Invincible Steel Man Daitarn-3. Those series and their contemporaries had giant robots as superheroes fighting "monsters of the week" in every episode.

Director Yoshiyuki Tomino had the revolutionary concept of the robots as instruments of war, akin to tanks and fighter jets. He drew inspiration from sources ranging from Formula One racing to Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers.

Production

The series premiered on TV Nagoya on April 7, 1979. It was originally planned to run for fifty-two episodes, however poor ratings forced a reduction in the count. Originally, it was to be cut down to thirty-nine episodes, but was expanded to forty-three upon Tomino's negotiations with his sponsors.
