The Provisional Government of Midland is a Canadian survivor nation located in and around the town of Midland Ontario.

Pre-Doomsday History

The town of Midland was founded when, in 1871, the Midland Railway of Canada selected the sparsely populated community of Mundy's Bay as the new terminus of the railway. The village thrived based on Georgian Bay shipping and the lumber and grain trade. Incorporated into a town in 1890, a number of light industrial companies have established themselves in the area and tourism in the southern Georgian Bay area also contributed to the economy.

Post-Doomsday

Aftermath

Southern Ontario suffered five nuclear strikes, one in the Canada's capital Ottawa, two in Toronto and its suburbs, and another on the city of Hamilton, with the city of Windsor being destroyed in strikes on Detroit. Hordes of refugees from the effected areas fled in all directions including the Midland-Barrie region. The local hotels, lodges, camp grounds and cottages that were left unoccupied were opened up for the refugees fleeing north.

Working in conjunction with the local government and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) the settling of the refugees as largely peaceful. Sporadic contact was made with the Canadian government outpost at the city of Kingston but soon these lines of communication collapsed in the chaos, leading to the inhabitants not even knowing if it still survived.

As the situation stabilized other small towns and villages in the area began to band together with Midland forming a provisional government until contact was made with the Federal government.

Current events

Midland first had contact with Superior in 1991, when they helped the government beat off an attempt by raiders - now suspected to be a relation of some sort to the Lawrence Raiders - and subsequently offered Midland annexation. The Midland council, however, politely refused, opting instead to trade goods with their new found neighbors. Following the re-establishment of contact with Canada in 2001, talk of joining Superior was squashed for good. Subsequent relations with Superior have been mixed at best with disputes over territory and the growing anti-Superior sentiment that occurred after the outbreak of the 2009 Saguenay War.

Only recently has Midland had reliable contact with the Canadian Remainder Provinces and any plans for being reunited with their mother country have been put off for now due to logistical reasons, since contact through Kingston is far from secure at the present time. There has been some resentment towards Canada for "abandoning" the Southern Ontario region but the general feeling in the Midland area is pro Canadian, and possibly even an ally in the future.

The recent contact with Canada has also squashed any talk of officially declaring independence from Canada.

Tornado

On June 23, 2010, Midland was struck by an estimated F2 tornado which caused considerable damage to Smith's Camp, a trailer park at the south end of the town where many refugees live. Fortunately no one was killed but about a dozen people suffered minor injuries.

Economy

Agriculture and some small scale industrial facilities make up the heart of the nation's economy since Doomsday. Despite Midland being the capital, Barrie has been the mecca of recent economic growth with a mini baby boom in the late 90's and businessman from Superior, Kingston, London and Niagara Falls setting up businesses or trade deals.

Climate

The climate of this area is a Humid continental climate with large seasonal variation moderated somewhat by the Great Lakes. Summers are warm and humid (sometimes hot) but were shorter than further south with generally cooler nights before Doomsday but the effects of the nuclear exchange made the summers even warmer. Winters are cold with significant snowfalls; some snowbelt areas receive an average of over 300cm (120 in.) per year. Severe summer thunderstorms are also a commonplace, particularly in Simcoe County which for Ontario has a high tornado prevalence before and after Doomsday and was the site of the infamous Barrie Tornado in 1985.

Armed Forces

Midland has no official standing army other then the OPP and a small militia based in the old Borden Canadian Forces Base outside of Barrie.
