The 2003 Mexican general election was contested on March 8, 2003 to elect the Mexican Congress. The incumbent government, led by Vicente Fox (PC) and his coalition allies New Movement for Mexico, defeated Andrés Manuel López Obrador (PR) and two smaller sister parties on the left in a landslide, increasing their representation in the Congress by 17 net seats and winning by impressive margins in southern and central Mexican regions that typically supported more left-leaning candidates. With the win, the PC established itself as a new powerful party in Mexico.
