Melquíades Rafael Martínez Ruiz, usually known as Mel Martínez (born October 23, 1946), is an American politician and former lobbyist who is currently serving as the 38th President of the United States. Martinez is the only President to serve who was born after the Second World War and the first Latino to serve the office. Prior to his election to the Presidency Martinez served as a U.S. Senator from Cuba (1986-1992) and as Governor of Cuba (1993-2005).

Early life

Martínez was born in Sagua, Cuba, to Gladys V. (Ruíz) and Melquíades C. Martínez. His father was a former U.S. Army captain who had retired after the end of the Second World War. Martinez was born during a time of great change in Cuba.
