Since January 2005, 93-year old Maximilian I has been unable to assume the responsabilities of his post. A regency has taken his post over temporarily. However, in March 2006, his doctors said his condition was critical. On June 28, 2006, he was taken to Mexico City Emergency Center. The next day, on June 29, 2006 he died.
