The Marquis impactor, or more speculatively known as the Marquis asteroid, was an asteroid or comet at least 6 miles (10 km) in diameter which created the Marquis Crater (discovered by Guernseyan oceanographer Axel Marquis). It impacted on a landmass in the North Atlantic Ocean, which was destroyed as a result of the collision. It is speculated that had the impactor missed the landmass, a series of isles would have developed north of present-day Normandy, France, dubbed the "Marquis Isles" by scientists. The time of the impact is believed to be at the end of the cretaceous period, causing a mass extinction that led to the extinction of most dinosaurs.
