Maharashtra, officially the Maharajanate of Maharashtra is a sovereign nation in western and central India. Maharashtra is located south of Gujarat, Malwa and Magadha; west of Kalinga and northwest of Tamilakam.

Maharashtra derives from the Marathi words maha and rashtrikan, which together form Maharashtrika, which would mean "great people" (literally "great nationals"). The official name of the country is Maharajanate of Maharashtra. A maharajanate is a realm ruled by a maharaja, an Indian title equivalent to either king, king of kings, or high king. The official name in Marathi is महाराजाजमीन महाराष्ट्र (Mahārājājamīna mahārāṣṭra, literally "Maharajaland of Maharashtra). The official name in Kannada is ಮಹಾರಾಜಭೂಮಿ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ (Mahārājabhūmi mahārāṣṭra, also literally "Maharajaland of Maharashtra").
