In 1803, the French Territory of Louisiana was sold to the United States in order to make much needed money for the impending British-French War. On April 11, 1803, the entire 828,000 square mile territory was sold for 15 million dollars, doubling the size of the Union, and largely popularizing the idea of Manifest Destiny. But what if it had never happened?
Suppose that only three weeks earlier, the first days after New France acquires the territory, a private donor supplies enough money to squash the revolt in Haiti, and prepare the country for a battle with England. America doesn't buy the territory. What would happen? What would change?
