Lorraine (Lorrain: Louréne) is a country of France. A landlocked region, it is bordered by Germany to its east, Belgium to its north, Champagne to its west, and Franche-Comté to its south. Lorraine is a region of deep forests, hills and low mountains (the Ardennes) and many rivers, including the Meuse, the Meurthe and the Moselle.

French Lorraine was cut down to size, as the northeastern part of the historical region was annexed to Germany after the Franco-Prussian war, which led to the creation of the German Empire. A dialect of French, Lorrain, is spoken in the country, but virtually all of the population also knows and speaks French. A predominantly industrial region, manufacturing and mines (especially iron) are the driving sectors of its economy.
