The constitution of he United States of America states the President of the United States is both the head of state and head of government. The president is elected indirectly for a term of four years and as of 1951, no president can be elected for more than 2 terms. The president is recognized as the chief of the executive branch and head of the federal government as well as the commander-in-chief of the United States Army. Upon the death of the president, the vice president would be sworn in until the end of the presidential term.

As of 2012, there have been 44 presidents, six of whom have died in office of natural causes (Rufus King, John Eager Howard, , James G. Blaine, William B. Allison, Theodore Roosevelt and Robert Taft), three were assassinated (Charles Sumner, James A. Garfield and Robert F. Kennedy) and one impeached (Lewis Cass).
